15m Burpee Beep Test

The multistage fitness test (MSFT) is a commonly used maximal running aerobic fitness test. It is also known as the shuttle run test, beep or bleep test among other names. We've added a burpee to each round to make this standard test a little bit more interesting.

Equipment required:
Flat, non-slip surface, object for marking end lines (cones, water bottles, shoes... whatever you have), measuring tape, beep test app. Visit the App Store to download the "Bleep Test Lite" app. The application is free.

This test involves continuous running between two lines 15m apart and completing one burpee in time to recorded beeps.

To begin, the athlete stands behind one of the lines facing the second line, and begins running when instructed by the app's recording. The speed at the start is quite slow, you should be able to complete the run and burpee with time to rest. After about one minute, a sound indicates an increase in speed, and the beeps will be closer together. This continues each minute or as you complete each level of the beep test.

The athlete continues running between the two lines, completing one burpee within the time signaled by the recorded beeps. If the line is reached and the burpee is completed before the beep sounds, the athlete must wait until the beep sounds before continuing. A burpee is considered complete if two hands are over the line and you are on the ground. If the hands are not past the line and on the ground before the beep sounds, the athlete must continue to run to the line, burpee, then turn and try to catch up with the pace within two more ‘beeps’. The test is stopped if the subject fails to reach the line with their hands over the line and body on the ground for two consecutive lengths after a warning.

The athlete's score is the stage and number of shuttles with burpee reached before they were unable to keep up with the recording. Your score will have two numbers, the stage and the level. There are multiple levels in each stage. Record the last stage/level completed (ex. if you completed 4:2 and attempted 4:3 but did not finish in the 2 attempts allowed, your score is 4:2). When recording your score, use the Stage # presented on the app when you finished (ex. STAGE 4:1 or 9:4). Keep in mind, if you fail the 2 attempts you may have to subtract what is presented in the app to a score that is accurate to what you completed.

If you are unsupervised you are responsible to listen to the audio cues for which stage you are on. If you record yourself you can also rewatch the video and play audio through the app to confirm when you finished. We will provide a live Google Sheet where you are responsible for uploading your results.

In order to win and be provided your 50% of proceeds you must be able to supply full video upon request as proof of your attempt. In one complete video you must show us you marking your distance with a clean view of 15m + 2 items marking each end line as well as your entire uncut run following the measurement verification. Camera must be set up so that both end lines are in view. We recommend propping your camera up outside of your running lane at the midway mark, with both end lines in sight. Audio of the test does not need to be heard in your verification video.

This is a fun event and we are relying on some honesty. We will provide a live Google Sheet where you will be responsible for uploading your results on your own. Despite us only requesting video confirmation from the winner, there is nothing you gain from cheating.

What you need to know:

We will be running an optional Zoom debrief and Q/A prior to kickoff on the morning of Sunday, May 31st.

Download the "Beep Test Lite" app, measure 20m, complete the beep test (and burpees), record scores in Google Sheet, send video confirmation if you are an unofficial winner (you will be contacted).

All scores must be uploaded in the Google Sheet by 4pm on Sunday. No late scores will be accepted.

We will run another Zoom recap Sunday night formally announcing the winner, the $ amount won and recapping different strategies over a beer.

A follow up email will be sent including further Beep Test App instructions, video demonstrations and access to the Google Sheet and Zoom links for the debrief and awards recap.

Not so fine print:

  • We will not issue Refunds or substitutions.
  • If you unofficially win (after you upload results on Google Sheet prior to 4pm) and are unable to provide email video proof by 5:30pm Sunday night we will move down the list.
  • The standard beep test is 20m, however we will be running 15m (with burpee).
  • We currently have 1 division, if the prize pool gets high enough for a sizable prize, we will split it into a male and female division where both winners will take 25%.
